The Three Masters

Mike Langford – Jackie Ranken – Nick Melidonis
The Ultimate Landscape, Travel and Fine Art Master Class
Monday March 19th 2012
9.30 am – 5.00 pm
Notre Dame University, Fremantle WA
Over the last decade, three photographers have dominated the  AIPP ‘Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards’.

Husband and wife team Mike Langford and Jackie Ranken from New Zealand have each won it twice and Nick Melidonis three times. Mike Langford is also the current ‘Australian Professional Travel Photographer of the Year’ and Nick Melidonis was the runner-up.

With numerous other awards and achievements to their names, these three Master photographers will, for the first time, combine their expertise to provide an inspirational, fun and informative day at Notre Dame University that is not to be missed.

All three photographers have travelled extensively, capturing a vast range of landscapes, people and nature in some of the world’s most scenic locations. Each photographer will dissect samples of their signature images and explore their approach and elements of design in producing emotive images that connect with and engage the viewer.

Mike, Jackie and Nick are sought after professional educators and presenters with many years of sharing their depth of experience and knowledge. Participants will come away with inspiration,  fresh ideas and practical  solutions to taking their photography to a new and more exciting level.

Topics and themes covered will include:

  • Essential elements for a successful landscape image
  • Translating what you feel in the field into a powerful image
  • The art of design, composition and working the light
  • Capturing a ‘sense of place’ in your travel images that connect with the viewer
  • Imagination rather than imitation
  • Finding inspiration
  • How we see versus what the camera captures
  • The art of fine art photography – how to make your images different and visually powerful

About the photographers:

Mike Langford Mike Langford has 30 years experience as an international professional photographer and has lectured and given workshops to professional photographers for 20 years. He is a passionate and patient teacher to all levels of photography and through all the photographic disciplines including: landscape, portraiture, architecture and commercial photography.

Mike’s approach is one of research and understanding the requirements needed to successfully communicate an idea. He has published over 20 books, with more to come. Mike Langford has lived and worked out of Sydney Australia for twenty years and now lives in Queenstown New Zealand. Mike is the co-director of the Queenstown Centre for Creative Photography, along with his partner Jackie Ranken.

Jackie RankenJackie Ranken is a multi award-winning landscape art photographer who has established herself as a master photographer with her unique black and white aerial imagery. Her honoraries are long; but what matters to her is that she is out there photographing and exploring who she is, increasing her skills base and expressing herself through her photography.

She considers her ‘art’ to be classic black & white landscape photography, where the ‘fine art print’ is the most important end result of the photographic process. Jackie is the co-director of the Queenstown Centre for Creative Photography, along with her partner Mike Langford.

Nick MelidonisThe photographs of Nick Melidonis reflect passion, energy, vision and mastery of light & composition and he has travelled extensively in pursuit of emotive images from some of the world’s most graphic and wild locations.  Nick is a triple recipient of the AIPP ‘Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of the Year’ and current runner-up to the ‘Australian Travel Photographer of the Year’.

Nick delivers seminars and lectures to the imaging industry as well as photo enthusiasts and is a regular contributor to Better Photography Magazine and Better Digital Camera. He enjoys leading photographic tours to the Greek islands, Cambodia and Borneo.
